The 5th Annual Art and Design of Metal Clay Jewelry 2012 published by Holly Gage of Gage Designs is is now available to buy. The beautiful 28 page collectors calendar features a variety of jewelry pieces created with silver, rose gold, bronze, copper, and steel from today's most up and coming Metal Clay artists. Each page beautifully illustrates the diversity, artistry and pure magic of transforming a moldable metal into fine jewelry. You can also expect to see pieces mixing a wide range of media, techniques, and levels of complexity — truly an innovative selection.

Holly’s motivation for creating the calendar is from the perspective of a metal clay, metal smith, artist, educator, and advocate of this exciting medium, and uses this pictorial diary to show how Metal Clay can enhance the work of a jewelry artisan by adding it to their existing toolbox. Inspiration can be drawn from artist’s statements and websites beside each photo. Throughout the calendar jewelry conferences and competition deadlines are listed to encourage artist participation.

Holly Gage, and three experienced metal clay artists served as jurors. Emma Baird, Tracey Spurgin, and Lesley Messam gathered during Holly’s teaching excursion to Scotland, a wonderful backdrop for viewing selections for the 8 ½ x 11-wall calendar. Emma Baird said, “I regard The Art and Design of Metal Clay Jewelry publication as a showcase of the best work in Metal Clay around the globe. Looking at all the gorgeous pictures of jewelry submitted, and armed with new skills I’ve obtained, has broadened my horizons in every way possible. Being no stranger to submitting my work to such publications I am familiar with the anxiety it provokes, but what I could not have foreseen was the care and thought that takes place during such a process.”

Tracey commented, “The task was a difficult one, with over 300 images to view the task took us a lot longer than expected, this was not to be rushed. We had a scoring system, which helped to focus in on the specific elements of each piece of work. These scores were kept confidential from each other so as not to be influenced by the other judge’s marks, but several pieces did open up debate. To be on a judging panel is such a responsibility, but such an uplifting and positive experience.”

Lesley remarked about the visual impact of a photo, “That first excitement is something that I really didn't understand [when submitting artwork to other venues], I do now!! It is so important to get your work photographed properly, so if you’re in doubt, then you have probably answered the question.” Additionally, she emphasizes, “Read The Criteria. I was amazed at how many artists didn't fit the brief. I really enjoyed the whole experience. For myself, I will have a better insight to how, why and what jurors are looking for in the future.”

The Art and Design of Metal Clay Jewelry 2012 is a must have for jewelry lovers and makers alike. There will be a limited printing of the calendar, which is now available to buy.
